We urge you to reconsider your position on the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (HB1) and ask you to sign the bill into law when it comes to your desk.
More than 750,000 hardworking Marylanders are unable to earn a single paid sick day. As a result, these Marylanders are often faced with the impossible choice between their job and their health – or their loved one’s health – when illness strikes. No matter where you live, no matter what your job is, we all get sick. Yet nearly 40% of working Marylanders are not afforded the time to recover. The status quo is unconscionable, and it must end.
Constituents like me understand why the ability to earn paid sick days makes good common sense. When sick people stay home, the spread of illness slows. Children recover faster when their parents are able to care for them. And, families with access to paid sick days are more likely to be able to make ends meet.
The Healthy Working Families Act is a commonsense, reasonable solution to a very serious problem. It would allow Marylanders to earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours they work, up to five days per year for a full-time worker. Part-time workers, many of whom are struggling to support their families with multiple part-time jobs, would also be able to earn a limited amount of paid sick days, based on how much they work. In addition to allowing families to care for themselves or a child when they’re sick, the bill would allow victims of domestic violence to use “safe” days to access the services they need to protect themselves or their family.
If you sign this bill, you’d change the lives of hundreds of thousands of Marylanders who need your help.
You’d help the mother who today had to send her child to school sick because she couldn’t afford to take a day off.
You’d help the fast food worker who wants to do the right thing and stay home when he’s sick, but wouldn’t be able to pay his electric bill without a paid sick day.
You’d help the victim of domestic violence, who on top of everything else, must worry about whether she can afford to take a day off to get her family to safety.
You’d help the daughter who struggles to take care of her aging parents because she cannot afford to miss work to help with their medical needs.
And you’d help the working parent who lives in fear that if he gets sick, he could lose his job.
Not surprisingly, Marylanders’ support for the Healthy Working Families Act is overwhelming. Polls consistently show that over 80% of Marylanders – Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike – support the Healthy Working Families Act.
More than 750,000 Marylanders are counting on you. You have the ability to make a real difference in their lives. Please do the right thing for these Marylanders and sign HB1.
